Understanding Your Canadian Paycheque

Every Canadian paycheque has three mandatory deductions on top of income tax: Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions, Employment Insurance (EI) premiums, and provincial income tax. For 2026, the CPP employee rate is 5.95% on earnings up to $74,600, and the EI premium rate is 1.63% on earnings up to $68,900. Quebec residents pay into the Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) instead of CPP and have different EI rates.

Understanding your gross vs. net pay is essential for budgeting. Our Take-Home Pay Calculator shows you exactly what comes off your paycheque and why — including the CPP and EI tax credits that reduce your federal tax, which most online calculators miss entirely.
